COACH ABE'S PLAYING CAREER

In high school, Vernard "Coach Abe" Abrams was an All-League Wide Receiver for Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia. He went on to play in college for Division 1AA La Salle University, also in Philadelphia. During his collegiate career he proved to be an all-purpose threat on both sides of the ball. He began his college career as a defensive back and was an All-MAAC selection and All-American defensive back his junior season.
Abrams moved to QB his senior year and led the MAAC Conference in pass efficiency. Abrams also led an offense that finished first in the MAAC and 2nd nationally among 1AA Mid-Major Schools in 2004. His efforts earned him the MAAC Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Year award. Abrams graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.
Abrams took his career international playing as a quarterback/defensive back for a professional team in Italy. Upon his return to the states in the fall of 2005, Abrams coached the quarterbacks at La Salle University and with his tutelage, produced the MAAC Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Year and honorable mention All-American QB for Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Mid-Major All-American Team.
After the 2005 season, Abrams returned to the playing field for the Arena 2 football league. He showed his versatility by playing wide receiver, defensive back, and back-up quarterback. After his Arena season, from 2006 to 2008, Vernard served as the Wide Receivers coach at Division II, University of Minnesota-Duluth. While in his tenure at UMD he coached three All-Conference players, one Player of the Year, one Senior Athlete of the Year, and an All-American. Abrams also earned a Master’s of Education at UMD.

In 2008, Abrams gave his passion one last shot by earning a roster spot on an Arena 2 team in New York. At the conclusion of the season, Vernard was named to the AF2 All-Iron Man team for the league.
Vernard has a burning desire to pass on his knowledge of the game to the next generation of passionate football players. Vernard won a PA State Championship as Quarterback coach and is actively coaching high school football. Vernard is the owner of ACE Quarterback and Receiver training and Founder of the non-profit mentoring program, the Philly Football Movement and Impact Players Academy. Vernard mentors and trains the top area student-athletes looking to get an opportunity to play at the next level. He has been covering high school sports in the Philadelphia area since 2010 on his blog www.coachabefootball.com providing guidance and exposure to student-athletes in the Philly area.
Vernard currently resides in Philadelphia, PA.
